Peloton: Tell us about the jig you use. Mike Flanigan: I made my own frame, fork and stem jigs, along with much of my other tooling. I do also have tools from Sputnik and Anvil.
Peloton: You're known these days not for high-end road or mountain bikes, but bikes meant for transportation. What led your interest in making, shall we call them, practical bikes? Mike Flanigan: I think I always had an interest in bicycles made for transportation all the way back to my high school days, however I got sidetracked with road racing and then loaded touring.
Peloton: Who does your paint? Mike Flanigan: I do powder coating in house. I was a wet painter for many years at Fat and IF, but now I think powder coating is the only way to go. So much more duarble and cleaner and safer for everyone.
Peloton: How long is the wait for new customers?
Mike Flanigan: My average is about 6 months, but it can be a little as a few weeks to 12 months. The longest it has ever been is 14 months.
Peloton: What’s your pricing like? Mike Flanigan: Very reasonable. I make a complete bicycle that sells for $1,500.00. Most of my deluxe bicycles cost around $3,000.00 and up to $6,000.00
Peloton: What keeps the work fresh for you, gets you up in the morning (or out in the evening) and excited to build? Mike Flanigan: Just knowing that the shop is mine and all I have to do is...everything. I really love handling the whole process, from first customer contact to delivery day. I look forward to knowing that people that buy my bicycles use them to go places and that my bikes are something that they came to me to build, because I am one of the only people making bikes like this.
Peloton: Bottom line: What are your bikes supposed to ride like? Mike Flanigan: Stable, very smooth, just eats up bumps.
Peloton: What’s your life away from building like? What sort of outside interests do you have? Mike Flanigan: I have a great home life with my partner Betsy and her two children. We eat our meals together as a family, like to cook, we all read a lot, play games at home. We also like go hiking, a little camping and of course we go riding our bicycles together.
Peloton: Don’t forget the contact info: Mike Flanigan: Thanks: Mike Flanigan, ANT Bicycles
