The northwestern Spanish city of Ponferrada will host the 2014 UCI Road World Championships, the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced on Monday. Ponferrada lost out to Florence as host of the 2013 world championships and was the sole candidate for the 2014 event. The decision will be made official when the UCI's management committee meets in Copenhagen in September, UCI said. World cycling's governing body added that Oman and the US city of Richmond, Virginia, had already presented their candidatures to host the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, which will be held outside Europe "in order to acknowledge the increasing interest of non-European countries in hosting this prestigious event".
