The 2013 classics season is taking shape with ASO’s announcement of the teams selected for Paris-Roubaix, Flech Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Tom Boonen will be aiming to repeat at Roubaix and pass Roger De Vlaeminck as the first five time winner of the Hell of the North. His teammate, Sylvain Chavanel, will be there if he falters hoping to become the first French winner since Frédéric Guesdon 15 years ago. The young American, Taylor Phinney, could be the man for BMC, working with teammate Alessandro Ballan, who is clearly tired of finishing third at Roubaix after his third time last year.
The Ardennes classics feature rolling terrain more suited to the all around rider and is frequently the first time we see grand tour contenders truly stretch their legs in a new season. Joaquim Rodriguez won Flech last year, but Cannondale’s Peter Sagan has already marked the day on his calendar as an early season priority. Liege-Bastogne-Liege, or ‘La Doyenne’ meaning the oldest, was first raced in 1892 with the Belgian Léon Houa victorious. Last year’s edition was won by Maxim Iglinsky, but look for Philippe Gilbert, Andy Schleck and an on form Alejandro Valverde to ride to win.
