Damiano Cunego will again next season make the Tour de France his major target. The 30-year-old Italian was the seventh year in the final world standings this season and wants to make serious run at the yellow jersey. Cunego shot to fame in 2004 when he won the Giro d'Italia, a couple of years later he won won the white jersey of best young rider at the Tour de France. Despite these early successes he developed into more of a classics rider and has struggled in recent years to make an impact in general classification of a grand tour.
Another rider who will be skipping the Giro d'Italia is the Dutchman Robert Gesink. Gesink initially stated he would participate in the Giro, but will forfeit the Italian race to focus on the Tour de France.
