Lars van der Haar delivered on his promise in Koskijde, to become world champion two years in a row. The Dutchman beat Belgian Wietse Bosmans in the sprint. Michiel van der Heijden, another Dutchman, finished in third. In a tight finale Van der Heijden and Van der Haar constantly attacked Bosmans before the Belgian tried a surprise move 500 meters from the line but was beaten in the sprint.

Van der Haar took an early lead after the start but Bosmans clawed back onto his wheel. At the end of the first lap the duo had 10-second on the rest of the pack. Arnaud Grand and Mike Teunissen came close to closing the gap in the early laps but in the end it was only Van der Heijden that was able to make the juncture half way through the race.

As the race neared its conclusion the Frenchman Arnaud Jouffroy closed in on the leading trio, which kept the pace high on the front. In the lead, the Dutch tried to take advantage of their numbers, but could not shake Bosmans. In the end the trio continued towards the finale with Van der Haar leading Bosmans and Van der Heijden in the final sand section, when Van der Haar made a mistake allowing Bosmans to move into the lead. This blocked Van der Heijden who lost contact. Bosmans was unable to take advantage and Van der Haar was able to get back and win the sprint.
