POC is a Swedish company that has made a name for itself in the dirt with uniquely styled and well-respected all-mountain and trail helmets, gloves and riding apparel. Founded in 2005, POC started in snow sports, before jumping into downhill and mountain bike protective gear in 2009. In their first move to the tarmac POC debuted the Tempor time trial helmet atop Gustav Larsson during the time trial at the London Olympics.
The project goal for the Tempor was simple ‘to develop a helmet that provides the highest possible performance in protection.’ To accomplish this POC utilized their helmet construction know how and partnered with the aerodynamic specialists at Semcon. The unique shape was developed through both computer and real world simulations to integrate the Tempor with the rider’s body position on a time trial machine. POC’s design approach was to view the rider as one body mass, rather than optimizing the aerodynamics of the head separate from the body. This resulted in the taller, rounder top and side wings, which channel air up and over the rider’s shoulders.
The Tempor maintains POC’s reputation for safety by utilizing overlapping upper and lower shells and an appropriate amount of exposed liner under the helmet’s tail for better impact absorption. The ventilation system is also optimized with regard to impact absorption without neglecting airflow and aerodynamics. The Tempor includes a detachable visor and is available in M-L, and L-XL sizes.
peloton has a Tempor in house, so look for a full review soon.
