At Interbike, Zipp debuted a new rear hub for its Firecrest Carbon rim-brake wheelsets, as well as the 202 Tubular wheelset. The latest iteration of its 188 rear hub, the V9, has a more refined design and new, more effective spoke-lacing pattern. The new 188/V9 hub is designed to improved stiffness and durability.
The 188/V9 hub features larger Swiss steel bearings with a custom cartridge to increase durability by more evenly spreading load over the axle. The lacing is also new with a “virtual 3 cross” pattern on both sides for improved stiffness. Zipp claims the new hub provides 25 percent more torsional stiffness than those of competitors. This measure of stiffness is crucial for direct power transfer to the rear wheel for out-of-the saddle sprints and climbs. The 202 Tubular and all Firecrest road wheels all have 18 spoke fronts and 24 spoke rears. The new 188/V9 hubs weighs 245 grams. It is 10/11-speed compatible with either SRAM/Shimano or Campagnolo cassette bodies.
