Popular in Madrid, the Sol y Sombra digestif is equal parts brandy and anis. The drink is named after its two parts, sol (sun) and sombra (shade).
If you want to attend a bullfight in Spain you have the choice of three types of seats, Sol (in the sun and less expensive), Sombra (in the shade and most expensive) and Sol y Sombra (a mix of sun and then shade as the fight progresses).
The dark hue of the brandy, mixed with the lighter anis, creates a very Spanish and unforgettable cocktail. Mostly enjoyed after dinner, it is however quite possible in many parts of Spain to see this drink enjoyed at various times during the day.
Enjoy two ways
1. Pour over ice in a shaker, then into a brandy snifter.
2. Serve at room temperature in a brandy snifter.
1½ ounce brandy
