The leaves are turning, and that means only one thing: Winter is coming. The key to riding happily through fall and well into winter is proper layering. But more than that it’s having well-designed layers that complement one another. ASSOS’s new EQUIPE RS Winter Collection, made for serious riding through the coldest months, aims to do just that, working seamlessly with one another to handle a variety of conditions.
The collection is made of three different tops that are all made to layer with one another, as well as a pair of thermal bib shorts. The entire collection centers around the johDah jacket, which uses textiles that ASSOS says activate under effort to regulate body temperature. To accomplish this heat regulation, the front of the jacket is made of several different layers of material. The first layer is similar to those used on a mid-layer. The next layer features a 3L windproof and waterproof SPHERE Light material, which also incorporates a light thermal interior for added warmth. But to shed any excess heat, there are also what ASSOS calls “diffusor valves” at the shoulders, which draw in air and channel it between the layers of fabric inside the jacket. For insulation from windchill, the upper arms use a warp-knit 3L ZigZaggy Foam. The back panel also features a “Thermobooster Pod” to hold the other layers in the collection, the Clima Capsule or Thermobooster Mid Layer, when not needed.
For colder weather, add in the Thermobooster, a mid layer that goes on above a base layer and under the johDah jacket. Made of an OSMOS Heavy material, the Thermobooster traps in heat while releasing any excess moisture. Made with a raw-cut hem, this mid-layer is designed to fit close with the other layers in the collection both above and below it. It is available both as a short sleeve and as a long sleeve version, which also comes with an integrated face mask.
The final layer is the Clima Capsule, which uses a Silver Haze fabric for the upper half, a water-repellent and windproof material that is also highly visible thanks to a reflective silver membrane. Pull this layer on for extra wind protection or on humid days.
And for thermal bibs, ASSOS has you covered with the EQUIPE RS Winter Bib Tights S9. This is the first pair of the brand’s winter bibs to feature A-Lock Engineering, which is a system that holds the chamois in place as you shift around and ride in or out of the saddle. The bibs also feature a new EQUIPE RS Winter chamois, which does away with the ventilation holes found in the brand’s non-winter bibs.
