We got the announcement last summer, “Canyon Bikes is coming to the US in 2017, hang tight for details!” Today we got some of those details and they run contrary to many of the rumors that had been circulating. Canyon will launch its direct-to-consumer business in the US with the 2018 model year, meaning bikes won’t be available stateside until late Summer or early Fall.
Canyon will be bringing in road, tri and mountain bikes with similar spec to the European bikes and says US riders can expect similar pricing as well. While exact prices have yet to be determined due to exchange rates and ongoing supplier negotiations currently a Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 9.0 with Dura-Ace 9100 and Reynolds Strike SLG carbon clinchers is €5500 in Europe – $5930 at the current exchange rate. Canyon also announced a big commitment to disc road in 2017, so expect a full line up of disc bikes when Canyon opens shop in the US.
Canyon began selling direct-to-consumer online in Europe in 2003. “2008 was the first year international sales surpassed German sales and our brand has continued to grow strongly across the globe ever since. For us, entering the U.S. marks the next big step for Canyon.” said Canyon Founder & CEO, Roman Arnold.
Canyon delivers bikes to your door – no shop involved – but there were rumors of a possible alliance with Velofix, the Sprinter van based service company – to deliver bikes to riders in the US. Another rumor had Canyon setting up shop in Utah, alongside Mavic and ENVE, but Canyon’s US operations – customer service and warehousing – will be in Southern California. Canyon predicts a delivery time of within 2 weeks if the bike purchased is listed as ‘In Stock’. Canyon bikes are manufactured in Asia and typically built in Germany. To streamline the process Canyon will begin assembling some bikes destined for the US market in Asia as well.
It’s no secret Canyon ran into severe delivery problems in Europe due to IT system issues, but has gotten delivery back on track and learned lessons that should help the move to the US go smoothly. Dedicated US customer service in Southern California should also help relieve some riders fears of after sale support for things as simple as a proprietary derailleur hanger.
