Jan 5, 2015 – It’s very rare that an everyday rider gets the opportunity to ride with the same technology that comes out of Team Sky HQ, but thanks to Rapha, their latest marginal gain will be available online and in Rapha Cycle Club stores.

The Shadow line by Rapha drastically simplifies the need to pack on layer after layer in bad weather. Forget a thermal layer for warmth, forget a wind proof layer and leave the rain shell at home on all but the worst days. Thanks to very high wind resistance and excellent water repellency as well as breathability – especially tough to get when mixing layers – Shadow is designed to straddle multiple weather conditions with minimum gear and maximum comfort.
A blend of fibers produce a stretch-woven fabric with the same flawless Italian-construction that you will find in Rapha’s Pro Tour line, with the inclusion of three-season treatment. Each yarn is treated with DWR (Durable Water Repellent) and woven together, then layered, and steam-pressure is applied to tighten each weave and add water resistance, and finally another DWR coat is added.
But Rapha knows all to well, marginal gains are in the details, so they included their Vizlon zip with a chunky ergonomic puller for ease of use, three rear cargo pockets with drill holes to let rain away from your goods, and a brushed inner and mesh fabric on the collar for comfort. Lastly, Rapha includes taped seams on the shoulders and 3/4 length sleeves for an extra touch against water.
The price tag isn’t small, yet the three-season Shadow line focuses on eliminating the additional layers you will likely need, possibly saving you money in the long run. Rapha is not the first to bring this kind of function to the humble jersey and bibs. This versatile style of garment was pioneered by Castelli with the Gabba line. Many other manufacturers now make similar garments including Giordana and its exceptional G-Shield line.
