Veteran Voigt, 43, ended his long career last month by breaking the nine-year-old record and setting a new mark of 51.115km.

Now Brandle, 24, wants to beat other time trial specialists, such as Briton Bradley Wiggins who has stated his intention to tackle the feat next year, to the achievement by bettering Voigt’s mark.

Like Voigt, the three-time Austrian time trial champion will attempt to beat the record in Switzerland, although at the Aigle velodrome rather than the Granges one where the German rode.
