The 30-year-old Orica rider, who also won the event in 2011, 2013 and 2014, was a full 51 seconds faster than second placed Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg over the 42.7km route. During the 2013 Tour de France, Impey became Africa’s first overall leader of the world’s most famous race, donning the yellow jersey for two stages.
Kenyan-born, South African-schooled Chris Froome had been expected to take the continent’s first yellow jersey, but went on to win the Tour that year.
