Explore Walla Walla by bike

Thanks to the gold rush and the town’s proximity to major rivers, Walla Walla was already a jamming spot at the end of the 19th century. As such, the historic downtown is full of beautiful brick facades and walkable streets that give it its vibrant character. While first known for gold and then agriculture, Walla Walla is now making its name as a wine town—and at the weekend the streets are bustling with out-of-towners eager to try the best vintages the area has to offer. And the best way to see it all? Yup, on a bicycle.

Either bring your own bike or rent one from the friendly folks at the centrally located Allegro Cyclery. The owners, Kathryn and Michael, are avid cyclists themselves and are always willing to have a chat or offer recommendations. Once you’re geared up, make a beeline for one of the area’s famous wineries. The South Wine Loop is a good bet. The easy 15-mile circuit heads just south of Walla Walla and takes you past five different vineyards. One of the first you’ll hit is Kinhaven Winery and Vineyard. A small, family-owned operation, the winery features a large patio with stunning views and an excellent assortment of local wines.

If you’re looking for lunch with your drink, try heading over to Valdemar Estates Winery. Housed in a beautiful modern building, Valdemar has a sister winery in Spain and as such customers have their pick of delicious tapas as well as matching Spanish and Walla Walla wines. Try the croquetas!

Once you’ve rolled your way back to town, take some time to relax and swing past Whitman College to view its Outdoor Sculpture area or if you’re in town during spring literally smell the flowers as the dogwood trees will be in full bloom on every other corner. Afterward, head over to Yamas Greek Eatery in the heart of downtown for delicious Mediterranean food and a huge outdoor patio.

If you’d rather not go it alone, check out Kickstand Tours for a guided cycling experience. The veteran local guides will take you by e-bike to three different vineyards and it’s an excellent way to get a taste for Walla Walla without having to research the logistics yourself. When it’s all done, check in for a restful night at The Finch hotel. Right in the middle of downtown, it’s a great base for whatever kind of riding (or drinking) you plan on doing.
